Be an interactive audience!
Below are some common words that you can use to encourage dancers (and other members of the audience) during the performance:
"Opa!" (pronounced: oh-Pa), the equivalent of bullfighting's "Olé", translates to "Well Done"
"Hizzy Hizzy!" translates to "Shake Shake" or "Shake it Baby!", commonly called during drum solos.
"Jamilah" (pronounced: jah-Mee-la) translates to "Beautiful", common during slower pieces but appropriate any time.
"Ya Habibi" (pronounced: Yah ha-bee-bee) translates to "Beautiful One" or "Beautiful Dancer"; general term of encouragement
"Ya Su" translates to “Yes”; a general term of encouragement.
“Yallah” (pronounced Yah-La) translates to “Good Job!”, common during faster dances
Other 'sound effects' include:
"Rrrrrrr" (rolled 'r's) - general sound of encouragement.
"Ssssss" unlike in melodrama performances, this call is used during slow songs to encourage the dancer's slow, graceful, or sinuous movements.
A 'zagarheet' - a fast high falsetto 'lalalala' used for celebrations (anytime we dance it's a celebration!)
If you are too busy enjoying the performance to call out, clapping along to the music is always welcome and appreciated.

The Daughters of the New Moon is a "family friendly" troupe, and all of our performances are guaranteed to be family friendly and suitable for any but the most prude of audiences. We don't do burlesque, and we don't take anything off (the occasional veil notwithstanding!). Come see for yourself, and bring the kids!
